When you decide you want to finally have a litter of puppies, you need to be prepared. You need to be prepared before your litter of puppies arrive. The worst thing someone can do is have your female bully going into labor and you do not have supplies. You won’t have time to run to the store to grab the items you did not get. I have seen many people who think they are ready to have a litter of puppies and they don’t even have gloves to pick up the puppies. You have to be prepared.

What supplies are needed to whelp a litter?

It is less stressful when you have the supplies that are needed to be successful. Some of the items I always make sure to have are: gloves, a whelping box, a heat lamp, blankets and towels (lots of them), a nasal aspirator, scissors and string, scale, and ribbon. Some of these items are self explanatory as to why you need them, but some might not be.

You want a nice, quiet area for your female to have her puppies. Most breeders use a whelping box. It protects the puppies and the female if you have other dogs in the house or small children. You will want to lay lots of blankets or towels down. You will also want some to help wipe the puppies off when they are born. It is also important to have a nasal aspirator. Sometimes you will have a puppy come out and they have fluid in their nose and lungs. When this happens you will need to help suction them out to be able to breathe. Always keep one or two of those on hand. Scissors and string are also important. If the female doesn’t bite off enough of the umbilical cord, then you will need to tie it off and cut it off.

What is a whelping box and where can I find one

A whelping box is an area that helps protect the puppies and the female so they are able to stay safe and warm. You can order a whelping box online from many different online companies or you can make one yourself. We made ours and got the supplies from Home Depot. We did a box that was 4×4 and had walls on all four sides. The front side we had cut out a section that was still high enough for the puppies not to walk out of it, but short enough for the female bully to step in and nurse the puppies. We also laid down peel and stick bathroom tiles and sealed it with caulking to make clean up a lot easier when the puppies would use the restroom. (I have posted a picture of the first one we ever built.)

Conclusion….

To sum it up, just be prepared. Do your research and get everything that you think you need or should have to have a successful litter. If you think you need it you probably do. The last thing you want is to have your female bully going into labor and you don’t have an area for her to labor or towels to clean up the puppies and keep them warm.
